Put Down the Lemon: An Esthetician’s Perspective on DIY Skincare Tutorials

Most of us have seen those YouTube tutorials that promise to make our skin glow via the use of “all-natural” ingredients found in kitchens everywhere (with baking soda, lemons, tomatoes, or other foods), but do these DIY solutions actually work? More importantly, could you be damaging your skin without knowing it by using some of these “all-natural” items on your epidermis? Professional esthetician and YouTube vlogger Veronica Gorgeois recently posted a video covering DIY and at-home skincare procedures that could end up doing more harm than good for your skin. In the video, she covers many DIY “recipes” and explains why they are not great for skin:

Half a lemon + sugar = face exfoliator (a recipe for tiny face lacerations)

Tomato + sugar on face (same thing)

Baking soda and your face (messes up the pH of your face due to alkaline content; use jojoba beads instead)

Toothpaste on your face as a mask (baking soda content!)

There’s more, of course–including strong warnings against the use of lavender oil (!) and alcohol (!!) on the skin as a toning solution and for blackheads, respectively. Watch the entire video below, and be sure to visit Veronica’s Facebook page for more info about DIY skincare–both what to do at home and what to avoid doing yourself.
